How to build a capsule wardrobe
Foster sustainability and hack your morning style routine with mix-and-match items that are made to last! Read on for tips on building a seasonal capsule wardrobe.
What is a “Capsule Wardrobe”?
In short, a “Capsule Wardrobe” is a curated collection of interchangeable clothes that become the building blocks of your closet.
By focusing on classic pieces that do not go out of style, a capsule is the antithesis of fast fashion. It’s part of the lean-closet movement which is embraced by environmentalists and minimalists alike.
Investing in a wardrobe capsule is like going from casual dating (with lots of swiping left after the first date or two), to building a long-term relationship. You are going to seek a quality partner with sticking power.
Why should I invest in a capsule wardrobe?
Do you look into your cluttered closet and struggle to find something to wear?
A well-planned capsule allows you to build countless outfits from a small collection. It simplifies your morning style routine and fosters sustainably. Whoever said “less is more”, was on to something…
Look put together
Promote sustainability
Save money and time
Avoid decision fatigue and stress
Strive for emotional lightness as you simplify your closet and your routine
How does it help the environment?
The United Nations Environment Programme reported that fashion accounts for 10% of global carbon dioxide output, which is more than shipping and international flights combined. Polyester, a type of plastic derived from oil, is used in more clothing than cotton.
Bloomberg reports that in the US, we throw away 2,150 pieces of clothing each second, the vast majority of which ends up in the landfill. The average person wears an article of clothing just seven times.
Made-to-last sustainably sourced basics in classic styles can change that equation. That’s why we subscribe to the lean-closet philosophy.
How do I get Started?
De-clutter your existing closet. Donate that which no longer fits or serves you.
Store items that are out of season.
Take inventory of the basics you already own. These will become your building blocks.
Identify statement pieces that you adore and will carry forward into your capsule style.
Plan what’s missing to flesh out your evolved mix-and-match wardrobe for enduring style.
Things to note while building your Capsule Wardrobe
Neutral colors are easy to interchange and pair with prints or colors. Consider cream, white, black, grey, and navy.
Never underestimate denim as a neutral that pairs with almost everything.
Think layering, accessories, and pairing the same top with multiple bottoms to produce many variations with a small collection.
Be prepared to spend a little more on each item to get quality materials and classic styles that will last. The long-term goal is to buy less. Fewer, better quality items.
Consider the following items for Spring
This list will differ by the season (and you’ll likely want to edit your collection according to the season), but here are some building blocks to consider for your spring capsule:
Soft t-shirts and tanks in neutral colors
Organic cotton blouse (great opportunity to add a pattern here. Avoid “trendy” cuts and prints that will go out of style or you will easily tire of)
A knit cardigan and a jean jacket for layering
Comfortable jeans in a cut that flatters you (not necessarily what is trendy this year). Consider a light color like cream as well as traditional denim blue.
Soft breezy pants or midi skirt
An oversized blazer or shacket (shirt-jacket) to elevate the other pieces
A blue or black dress or jumpsuit that can be paired with sneakers in the daytime, and dressed up for a night out
Loafers, white sneakers, black boots
Your existing accessories (hats, belts, handbags, jewelry)
